How is the FIRE number calculated?

The most common form is annual spending divided by a safe withdrawal rate.

FIRE number ≈ annual spend ÷ SWR
  1. Estimate annual retirement spending in today’s dollars.
  2. Choose SWR (often ~4% as a starting point).
  3. Read the FIRE nest egg; this page also discounts it to today’s Coast number.

FIRE number notes

SWR is a dial, not a law

4% is a common starting point. Try 3.5% for conservatism or slightly higher with flexible spending — FIRE scales linearly with SWR.
